  101.      **  What is DosEA?  **

  104. The series name, "DosEA," is a play on words which means
  105. a dossier on DOS.
  106.  
  107. But, what is it?
  108.  
  109. Specifically, DosEA is a series of hypertext programs
  110. which explain DOS.  The series, so far, consists of . . .
  111.  
  112.   DosEA 1 -- For Absolute Beginners
  113.   DosEA 2 -- What is DOS?
  114.   DosEA 3 -- 10 Easy Commands
  115.   DosEA 4 -- Find That Command!
  116.  
  117. More programs are under development.
  118.  
  119. A key element in the presentation of the DosEA series is
  120. hypertext.  Once you get the idea behind hypertext, you
  121. can read and comprehend material extremely fast.
  122. Hypertext lets you select just what you want to read.  If
  123. you understand what you are reading, just keep at it.
  124. Otherwise, the hypertext leads you immediately to further
  125. explanations.

  127. Understanding hypertext is so crucial to the DosEA series,
  128. that the first program, "For Absolute Beginners," is all
  129. about how to use hypertext.  Even though the DosEA series
  130. is about DOS, the first program isn't about DOS, at all.
  131. Rather, it's about using hypertext.
  132.  
  133. The second program in the series, "What is DOS?", then
  134. uses hypertext to introduce DOS.  This and the succeeding
  135. programs in the series also use hypertext to explain
  136. further details about DOS.

  149. DOS.  It is for people who need to use personal computers,
  150. but do not have the time to get a degree in Computer

  182. "DosEA 3 -- 10 Easy Commands" is an MS-DOS tutorial that
  183. demonstrates exactly how to enter 10 easy commands.
  184.  
  185. First, the hypertext explains a command in some detail.
  186.  
  187. Then, the computer demonstrates it.
  188.  
  189. Next, the user tries it.
  190.  
  191. The computer double checks the effort and, if a command
  192. is not entered correctly after three tries, the computer
  193. shows again how it is done.
  194.  
  195. The commands are:

  199. TYPE               VER                 VERIFY
  200. VOL

  202. These commands were selected because they are internal
  203. and are present in every DOS version that is used commonly
  204. in the current marketplace.

  206. The commands are taught in a way which is non-destructive
  207. to the computer.  DosEA double-checks each command before
  208. it is sent to DOS, so that nothing on a disk should be
  209. changed.

  221. What this program needs:
  222.  
  223. >  512K of memory
  224. >  Any monitor
  225. >  MS-DOS 2.0 or higher
  226.  
  227. No installation is required if you only want to read the
  228. hypertext.
  229.  
  230. However, installation may (or may not) be required if you
  231. want to practice the commands.
  232.  
  233. How do you know?
  234.  
  235. To find out, start the program.  Assuming that DosEA is
  236. located on a disk in the "A" drive:
  237.  
  238.  Enter:  A:
  239.  Enter:  DOSEA3
  240.  
  241. Go to the Introduction and read about COMMAND.COM.
  242. Press <F2> when instructed to do so.  The computer will
  243. advise you if further installation is required.
  244.  
  245. If further installation is required . . .
  246.  
  247. The installation instructions are listed as numbered
  248. paragraphs.  You will not have to do all of them; just the
  249. ones that apply to your computer.  Start with No. 1.
  250.  
  251. 1.  If you are an experienced computer user and want to
  252. take a shortcut, go to Paragraph 2.  Otherwise, if you
  253. need specific instructions, go to Paragraph 3.
  254.  
  255. 2.  If you are an experienced computer user and want to
  256. know what is going on, rather than to follow specific
  257. instructions, this is the situation:  During the execution
  258. of DosEA 3, the COMMAND.COM file needs to be located where
  259. it was when the computer was booted.
  260.  
  261. 3.  If you have a hard disk, go to Paragraph 4.
  262. Otherwise, go to Paragraph 5.  Note:  "Hard disk" refers
  263. to an internal disk drive which you cannot see without
  264. taking your computer apart.  "Hard disk" does not refer to
  265. the 3.5-inch disk encased in hard plastic.

  273. 4.  DOS is not properly installed on your hard disk.  If
  274. you want to properly install DOS, you have two choices:
  275.  
  276.   A)  Consult the manual that came with your DOS.
  277.  
  278.   B)  Contact a knowledgeable friend or the person who
  279.       sold you the computer and ask him or her to help you
  280.       install DOS properly.  Tell this person that you
  281.       need to be able to boot your computer with the "A"
  282.       disk drive empty.
  283.  
  284. If you do not want to mess with installing DOS correctly
  285. on your hard disk, right now, and want to set up DosEA on
  286. a floppy disk system, go to Paragraph 5.
  287.  
  288. 5.  Figure out what is your DOS disk.  This disk is one
  289. which contains your DOS files.  It may (or may not) be a
  290. disk you put in your "A" disk drive when you turn on your
  291. computer.  You may have more than one DOS disk.  If you
  292. do, when instructed below to use your DOS disk, try
  293. any one of them.  If it does not work, try another one.
  294. Go to Paragraph 6.
  295.  
  296. 6.  If you have two floppy disk drives, go to Paragraph 7.
  297. Otherwise, if you have one floppy disk drive, go to
  298. Paragraph 11.
  299.  
  300. 7.  If both of your disk drives are the same size, go to
  301. Paragraph 10.  Otherwise, if they are different sizes, go
  302. to Paragraph 8.
  303.  
  304. 8.  If the DosEA 3 disk fits the "A" disk drive, go to
  305. Paragraph 9.  Otherwise, if it fits the "B" disk drive,
  306. go to Paragraph 10.

  314. 9.  Put the DOS disk in the "A" disk drive.  Put a brand
  315. new disk in the "B" disk drive.

  320. If you are asked for a volume label,

  322.   Enter:  DOSEA3
  323.  
  324. (If you are not asked for a volume label, do not enter
  325. DOSEA3.)

  327. When you are asked if you want to format another disk,

  331. Take the DOS disk out of the "A" disk drive.  Put the
  332. DosEA 3 disk in the "A" disk drive.
  333.  
  334.   Enter:  COPY *.* B:
  335.  
  336. Take the DosEA 3 disk out of the "A" disk drive.  Take the
  337. new disk out of the "B" disk drive.  With a soft pointed
  338. pen, label the new disk "DosEA 3."  Go to Paragraph 10.

  340. 10.  Turn off your computer.  Put your DOS disk in the "A"
  341. disk drive.  (If you have a special boot disk, put it into
  342. the "A" disk drive, instead.)  Put the DosEA 3 disk in the
  343. "B" disk drive.  Turn on your computer.
  344.  
  345.   Enter:  B:
  346.   Enter:  DOSEA3
  347.  
  348. When you are finished with DosEA 3, exit the program.
  349. Turn off your computer.  Repeat this procedure
  350. (Paragraph 10) each time you wish to run DosEA 3.
  351. (Stop here.)

  353. 11.  If you are an experienced computer user looking for
  354. a shortcut, go to Paragraph 12.  Otherwise, go to
  355. Paragraph 13.

  357. 12.  A 360K disk will barely hold COMMAND.COM and the
  358. files necessary to run DosEA 3.  Therefore, FORMAT /S
  359. will not work because there is not enough room on the
  360. disk.  Also, COPY *.* will not work for the same reason.

  399. drive.)

  402. into the disk drive and wait for the copying to be
  403. finished.

  494. The COMMAND.COM situation.
  495.  
  496. DosEA allows you to use actual MS-DOS commands during
  497. the exercises.  This means that the MS-DOS file
  498. COMMAND.COM must be readily available.
  499.  
  500. If you are using a properly installed hard disk, this
  501. requirement is already met.  By "properly installed"
  502. it is meant that you can start your computer with the
  503. "A" disk drive empty -- this indicates that COMMAND.COM
  504. is available on the hard disk.
  505.  
  506. If you have a hard disk, but must put a DOS disk in the
  507. "A" drive when you start your computer, this means that
  508. your hard disk is not properly installed.  You should
  509. contact the person you bought the computer from for help
  510. in getting the hard disk set up correctly.

  526. >>>  You get a "Bad command or filename" message.

  528. You did not do an exercise properly.

  530. The program filters your commands before issuing
  531. them to MS-DOS.

  533. If an exercise says enter "DIR" and you enter "TYPE,"
  534. even though "TYPE" is a legal command, you will get
  535. an error message.

  537. Since this program is written for beginners, this
  538. prevents anyone from mistakenly entering a damaging
  539. command.

  543. The default disk drive and directory may not be correct.
